Gary I. Furukawa
Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Freestone Capital Management, LLC
Gary is a Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Washington with a concentration in Business Administration-Accounting. He started his career with Deloitte & Touche in Seattle as a Certified Public Accountant. In 1982, he joined Smith Barney as a Financial Consultant, eventually rising to Senior Vice President. In 1999, Gary founded Freestone Capital Management, a leading wealth management firm in Seattle. Freestone has grown rapidly to become one of the top wealth management firms in the country according to Bloomberg.
Gary has been an unusually successful investor along the way, investing in a wide variety of asset classes:
- Distressed real estate during the 1980s
- Private equity in the early 1990s with Wizards of the Coast and Synthetic Industries
- Thrift Conversions from 1988 to present
- Amazon.com and Aquantive as an original angel investor
- Distressed debt and real estate (again) after the 2008 crisis
Today he serves as Chief Investment Officer for Freestone, manages Freestone’s Opportunity Partners hedge funds, and serves as co-manager of Freestone’s Real Estate funds. He is also a member of Freestone’s Board of Directors.
Gary lives in Hope Ranch with his wife Della and their four children, ranging in ages from 15 to 25. He enjoys a wide variety of outdoor activities including Cycling, Tennis, Yoga, Fly-fishing, Traveling and Reading.
